Top 10 Digital Marketing FAQs

Blog Post Header - Top 10 Digital Marketing FAQs

Digital marketing is constantly changing, and I often find myself answering the same questions about it from clients. So, I thought I'd see, with the help of my fellow digital marketers on LinkedIn, which seem to be the 10 most popular questions to ask, and then answer them for you!

  1. What is digital marketing? Digital marketing is the process of marketing online, using the internet and social media. It is a fast-paced and ever-changing area for marketing, as technology and online services continually evolve.

  2. What are the different areas of digital marketing?

    • Social Media Marketing - Using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to connect with your audience.

    • Content Marketing - Creating valuable online content (blogs, videos, infographics) to attract and engage your target audience.

    • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - Enhancing your website's visibility on search engines, such as Google.

    • PPC (Pay-Per-Click) Advertising - Creating paid ads on platforms like Google, Facebook, or Instagram.

    • Email Marketing - Sending targeted, personalized emails to nurture leads and convert them into customers.

    • Affiliate Marketing - Partnering with other businesses or influencers who promote your products for a commission.

  3. Why is digital marketing important? Digital marketing is incredibly important, although businesses do not always appreciate its relevance. By promoting your business and advertising online, you are instantly reaching an audience, both existing and new. It is also very cost-efficient in comparison to traditional marketing, and can yield fairly quick responses/turn-arounds.

  4. Would my business benefit from digital marketing?

In a word; absolutely. Digital marketing is incredibly broad and can be tailored to suit any business. By not having your business online, you will be missing out on reaching a potentially huge audience.

  5. Do you need a marketing strategy?

Again, this is a definite 'yes'. It is essential for you to have a proper strategy in place before starting any digital marketing, in order for you to remain in sync with your customer base and target them effectively. You can create an effective digital marketing strategy by using these key steps:

    • Set clear goals - Define what you want to achieve (brand awareness, lead generation, sales, etc.).

    • Know your audience - Understand their demographics, interests, and online behaviour.

    • Choose the right channels - Focus on the platforms where your audience is most active.

    • Create a content plan - Develop engaging and relevant content that aligns with your goals.

    • Measure and adjust - Continuously track performance and make adjustments as needed.

  6. Do I need a website?

YES! Without a website, potential customers may question your authenticity and legitimacy as a business. In this digital age, it is essential to have a presence online, and whilst being on social media is beneficial, having your own website gives you complete control over how your business is portrayed to the public.

  7. Do I need a blog?

Ultimately, this depends on the type of business you run and your marketing goals, but having a blog can significantly help to improve your SEO and establish your brand's authority online. You will need to dedicate time to writing the blogs but once written they can easily be shared across your networks, and even re-purposed later on.

  8. How does SEO Work?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of improving a website to rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs) for relevant keywords. It involves two main components:

    • On-Page SEO - Optimizing elements like content, keywords, meta tags, and internal links within your website.

    • Off-Page SEO - Building high-quality backlinks from other reputable sites, social media shares, and online mentions.

Good SEO increases organic (non-paid) traffic, which is essential for long-term online success.

  9. Is it ok to re-use content?

Yes - as long as it's your own! Content re-purposing is a great way to recycle old content in order to reach new audiences. You can amend content to suit different networks and audiences, and then re-share it over time.

  10. Is digital marketing the same as digital advertising?

Digital marketing focuses on long term goals, whereas digital advertising tends to produce more short term results. Digital advertising is just one part of digital marketing, where you will be promoting a specific product or service.
